Qualification for the Steve Largent Award says it is "presented
to the player who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and
integrity of the Seahawks.
"Until this year.

After practice Friday, coach Mike Holmgren was presented the trophy
as the winner of the 2008 Largent Award, which is named after the team's
Hall of Fame wide receiver and its first recipient in 1989, and voted on
annually by the players.

"Aw, man, don't get me choked up," Holmgren said when asked about

the unique situation. "It was very special. Steve Largent, I've admired

forever and ever and ever, and it really is a players' award.

"But these guys never cease to amaze me. Just when I think I've

got them figured out, they do something real nice for me.

"I told them I accept it with a heartfelt thanks."

Holmgren will coach his final home game for the Seahawks
on Sunday,

when they host the New York Jets at Qwest Field.

The list of former Largent Award winners reads like a
who's who ofSeahawks history: defensive end and Ring
of Honor member Jacob Green (1990),

linebacker Rufus Porter (1991), defensive linemen Jeff
Bryant and

Joe Nash (1992), free safety Eugene Robinson (1993),
wide receiver

Brian Blades (1994), linebacker Terry Wooden (1995),
defensive tackle

and Ring of Honor member Cortez Kennedy (1996),
linebacker Winston Moss

(1997), defensive end Michael Sinclair (1998), linebacker
Chad Brown (1999),

running back Ricky Watters (2000), fullback Mack Strong
(2001-02, 2004-06),

quarterback Trent Dilfer (2003) and wide receiver Bobby
Engram (2007).

And now Holmgren, a surprise -- and surprised -- winner.

"It's typically given to a player," Engram said. "But when
you've got a

future Hall of Fame coach, and with everything he's meant
to the organization,

he's very deserving of that award for what it stands for."
