Source Says Herm Edwards’ Chances of Staying with Chiefs Are Slim

It appears that Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards better not buy any green bananas. That is, it does not appear likely that Edwards will be back with the team now that Scott Pioli is the Chiefs GM and has say over pretty much everything in the organization.
ESPN’s Michael Smith reported today that it appears doubtful that Edwards will be back:
A source with knowledge of the team’s thinking told ESPN’s Michael Smith it has not been ruled out that Herm Edwards could return for the final year of his contract as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Conventional wisdom is that Scott Pioli, who is expected to be introduced as the team’s new general manager later Wednesday, will want to hire his own guy, but a source said Pioli is coming in with an open mind.
Look for Pioli to do as Smith’s report says. He’ll give Edwards at least a chance to stay, but at the end of the day, he’ll want his own guy. Wisdom says that Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is a strong candidate to get at least an interview to be the new Chiefs coach. Also possibly on the short list is former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.
