Tyler Polumbus. The newest Seahawk – an offensive tackle who was obtained Monday night in the trade with the Detroit Lions – made it onto the indoor field at Virginia Mason Athletic Center after practice already had started.

But that didn’t prevent him from getting some reps at left tackle with the scout team that worked against the Seahawks’ No. 1 defense.

Talk about a whirlwind week that delivered the 6-foot-8, 300-pound Polumbus to the Seahawks.

“I’ve been in three cities in one week now,” Polumbus said. “I got here about an hour ago and rolled right on to the practice field.”

Polumbus, 25, made the Denver Broncos’ 53-man roster as a rookie free agent in 2008, when Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates also was in Denver. Polumbus started eight games last season, but was waived last week. The Seahawks put in a claim, but Polumbus was awarded to the Lions because they had a worse record last season.

The Seahawks are in need of depth at the tackle position because first-round draft choice Russell Okung, the starter on the left side, is out with a sprained ankle; Ray Willis, the primary backup, is out after having arthroscopic knee surgery; and Chester Pitts, who is coming off microfracture knee surgery, just returned to practice this week.

The Seahawks traded the Lions an undisclosed 2012 draft choice for Polumbus and placed rookie cornerback Josh Pinkard on the reserve/non-football injury list to clear a roster spot.

Polumbus’ post-practice Q&A session quickly turned into Goodbye Polumbus as Okung pulled the new tackle into the locker room because the linemen are not allowed to talk to reporters. But Polumbus was given a short dispensation and returned to answer a few more questions.

“We ran the zone-blocking scheme my rookie season in Denver, so hopefully I’ll be able to fit right in,” he said.

Is there a chance Polumbus could play in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Raiders in Oakland?

“I’m going to get ready as fast as I can and get out there as fast as I can,” he said.

UNIT WATCH

Offensive line. The No. 1 group remained unchanged from the one that started against the Minnesota Vikings – Mansfield Wrotto at left tackle, Mike Gibson at left guard, Chris Spencer at center, Max Unger at right guard and Sean Locklear at right tackle.

But there were some changes on the No. 2 line. Mitch Erickson was at left tackle, Ben Hamilton worked at left guard and center (not at the same time, of course), Steve Vallos was a right guard and Joe Toledo at right tackle.

ON THE FIELD

The spirited practiced bubbled over at one point, as defensive tackle Red Bryant shoved Erickson after a play and then defensive end Red Bryant and Toledo joined the mix. As coach Pete Carroll was talking to the defensive linemen before the next play, strong safety Lawyer Milloy broke into “Kumbaya” on the sideline.

ROLL CALL

Defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson sat out, joining a group of nine other players who remained sidelined: defensive linemen Nick Reed and Kentwan Balmer; linebackers Aaron Curry, David Hawthorne and Leroy Hill; tight ends Chris Baker and Anthony McCoy; and Okung and Willis.

UP NEXT

The players will have a walk-thru Wednesday morning before the team flights to Oakland for Thursday night’s game against the Raiders.

The roster must be trimmed to 53 players by Saturday.
