Seahawks Camp Carroll: Tuesday 9-28-2010

FOCUS ON

Comings and goings. Coach Pete Carroll does not have nickname for Tuesdays. How about “Try-out Tuesday”?

The Seahawks made six more roster moves today, running the total to 201 since Carroll and general manager John Schneider were hired in January.

The biggest addition today was wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who has caught 307 passes for 4,319 yards and 34 touchdowns in his 11-season NFL career.

Also added were a couple of offensive linemen – tackle Breno Giacomini (6-7, 318), who was signed off the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad; and tackle/guard Allen Barbre (6-4, 300), who played the past three seasons for the Packers.

To clear roster spots for this trio, offensive linemen Mike Gibson and Mansfield Wrotto and running back Quinton Ganther were released.

Stokley, 34, was a fourth-round draft choice by the Baltimore Ravens in 1999. He caught 60 passes for 913 yards and seven TDs in four seasons with the Ravens, and then joined the Indianapolis Colts. He caught 139 passes for 1,916 yards and 15 TDs in four seasons with the Colts – including career bests of 68 catches for 1,077 yards and 10 TDs in 2004.

He played the past three seasons with the Denver Broncos, and work with Jeremy Bates when the Seahawks’ first-year offensive coordinator was an assistant with the Broncos in 2007-08. Stokley caught 108 passes for 1,490 yards and 12 TDs with the Broncos. He was released with an injury settlement after missing three of the Broncos’ four preseason games with a groin injury.

Barbre was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 draft by the Packers. He played in 25 games in three seasons, with seven starts last season, but was released on this year’s roster cut to 53 players. Giacomini was on the Packers’ roster in 2008 and 2009, appearing in one game. He was released at the end of training camp this summer and signed to the practice squad.

Schneider knows each of these linemen because he came to the Seahawks after working the past eight years with the Packers.

POSITION WATCH

Running back. It appears Carroll has settled on not only a starter, but a feature back, after Justin Forsett got 17 of the team’s 21 rushes in Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

Look again.

“Well, we’re definitely going that way and this week was the first time where we said, ‘Let’s get him as much as we can, let’s see what happens, let’s see how he produces,’ ” Carroll offered.

If you were waiting for the “but …” it didn’t take long to come.

“But the competition, in my mind, is not closed at all,” said Carroll, in typical always-compete fashion.

“But that’s the way we lean. We wanted to see what would happen when Justin really got the ball more than seven or eight times in a game. So we fed it to him a little bit more. We’re still growing, trying to figure it out.”

Forsett got seven carries in the opener against the 49ers and eight the following week against the Broncos, when he started both games. His increased load against the Chargers came at the expense of Leon Washington, who had one carry; and Julius Jones, the incumbent starter who did not touch the ball on Sunday.

“But he’s right there and ready to help us at all times,” Carroll said when asked about Jones’ role. “We’re just trying to get a sense for it. It’s going to take us awhile.

“I know that it might make you feel real impatient about that, but I’m not. We’ll just figure it out and take some time and get some more reps in there. … This is a long season and the competition remains and all that. We have a starter right now. That’s what I think I can tell you.”

WASHINGTON’S THE ONE

Leon Washington will be named the NFC special teams player of the week on Wednesday, not surprising after he returned kickoffs 101 and 99 yards for touchdowns to spark the Seahawks’ win over the Chargers.

ROCK THE VOTE

Earl Thomas is among the nominees for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors after the Seahawks’ free safety intercepted a pair of fourth-quarter passes against the Chargers.

Voting will continue until Friday at 9 a.m. PDT.

STAT DU JOUR

The Seahawks have their bye next week – Oct. 10. They are 16-5 in games prior to their bye week.

UP NEXT

The players return Wednesday from their “off” day to begin preparing for this week’s game against the Rams in St. Louis. The Seahawks had six road wins the past three seasons and three of them came at the Edward Jones Dome.

YOU DON’T SAY

“Well, it was either they score or we get the ball. So everything was on the line on that play.” – quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, on Earl Thomas’ fourth-down interception to seal Sunday’s 27-20 win over the Chargers
