Deadspin, citing a Seattle Times poll, has declared Seattle’s 12th Man a traitor.
The poll showed that a majority of respondents want the Seahawks to lose Sunday to the St. Louis Rams and not qualify for the playoffs.
It has nothing to do with the embarrassment of having a team with a losing record in the postseason. It’s all about draft position.
If the Seahawks reach the playoffs, they automatically will have one the final 12 picks in the draft. If the lose to the Rams, they’ll pick between the sixth and 11th spots.
Barry Petchesky of Deadspin takes issue with the polls results:
Now, we have nothing against tanking. If your team’s eliminated, by all means, lose out. There’s a big difference in potential draftees for the 2-win Panthers and any other team that needs a QB, like, say, the 4-win Bengals. But the key phrase is “once your team’s out of it.” The Seahawks can make the playoffs, for god’s sake. It’s unacceptable to root against a playoff appearance for draft positioning.
Petchesky points out that the playoffs are a 12-team tournament where anything can happen. Even the Arizona Cardinals made the Super Bowl two years ago.
