Dareus, Ingram wow scouts at ‘Bama pro day

Published on March 9, 2011 by     Seahawk Fanatic

As I expected, Marcell Dareus and Mark Ingram did not disappoint Wednesday.

The two studs from Alabama wowed the approximate 100 personnel folks in attendance at the Crimson Tide’s pro day and did nothing to hurt their stock as potential early picks. In fact, you might say they elevated it.

In Ingram’s case, he might have eased concerns – if there were any to begin with – about his speed, improving upon his 4.61-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Ingram ran it in 4.53 and 4.56 Wednesday and looked outstanding in position drills.

“I think it’s important. But sometimes you have to turn on the tape,” Ingram told reporters, then held his thumb and index finger a couple of inches apart. “The difference between 4.4 and 4.6 (seconds) is like that.

“On the football field, that kind of evens out a bit.”

As for Dareus, he looked good in his field drills. To me, he’s the real deal. He’s a power player like Ndamukong Suh was last year. He could have that kind of impact, I think.

All 32 teams were present, including John Elway and Brian Xanders of the Broncos, GM Tom Heckert of the Browns, GM Buddy Nix of the Bills, and defensive coordinator Ray Horton of the Cardinals.

Julio Jones, who impressed at the combine, did not work out Wednesday because of a foot injury. Neither did QB Greg McElroy (hand) or TE William Dial (sports hernia). McElroy and Dial will hold individual pro days on April 5.

OL James Carpenter, who was at the combine, did a vertical jump of 20 ½ inches, an 8-foot-10 broad jump, and ran a 4.85-second short shuttle and 7.52 3-cone drill.

Two players from other schools also worked out:

South Alabama WR Courtney Smith (6-4, 223) ran 4.66 and 4.65 40s, a 4.24 short shuttle and a 7.01 3-cone drill. He also did a 32-inch vertical and a 9-8 broad jump.

Stillman College DB Michael Ricks (6 7/8, 189) ran 4.59 and 4.56 40s, a 4.49 short shuttle and a 7.59 3-cone drill. He also had a 32 ½-inch vertical and a 9-10 broad jump.
