After choosing not to work out at the Scouting Combine, Nate Irving was the center of attention at North Carolina State’s pro day on Wednesday.
On the field, Irving’s production speaks for itself. He weighed in at 242 pounds and ran well for his size, which will garner attention. After you see him work out, his best position on the NFL level is probably as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Linebacker coaches from Baltimore, Carolina and Tampa Bay were on hand to watch Irving, and both the Ravens and Panthers run 3-4 schemes.
Irving ran 4.76 and 4.79 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had a 32 1/2-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-11 broad jump, a 4.25-second short shuttle, a 6.98 3-cone drill and did 27 reps in the bench press.
Irving’s workout went well, and I see him as a third- to fourth-round pick.
Overall, 11 players worked out outdoors on grass for 22 teams.
Another notable prospect was wide receiver Owen Spencer (6-2 ¼, 192), who ran 4.56 and 4.52 in 40 — almost the same as his time from the combine — and did seven reps in the bench press. Spencer runs good routes, but needs to work on catching the ball with his hands.
