The Seahawks kept their first-round pick in the NFL Draft tonight and used it to select Alabama offensive tackle James Carpenter.
They had other options, including Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith and tackles Gabe Carimi of Wisconsin and Derek Sherrod of Mississippi. But they opted for Carpenter, 6-foot-4, 321-pounder who will be a candidate to start at right tackle – opposite Russell Okung, last year’s first-round pick who started at left tackle as a rookie.
Listed as a steady, durable and reliable performer, Carpenter also could play guard.
