From the sidelines: Seahawks vs Rams

Present-thinking Seahawks charge past the Rams and set up another one-game-at-a-time opportunity on Sunday in Chicago.

Coach Pete Carroll repeated the same question multiple times before, during and after the Seahawks’ 30-13 battering of the Rams on Monday Night Football.

“What are we going to do about it now?” the head coach asked his team on Sunday night, less than 24 hours before kickoff of what would be a total domination at CenturyLink Field. “That’s what counts.”

The question wasn’t raised out of uncertainty, but more so as a challenge. The past — three wins in four games — didn’t matter as much as the Seahawks’ very next step. It’s a message Carroll preached leading up to and through Monday’s game that pushed Seattle to a 6-7 record — and it’s a point the club will need to continue sticking to if they hope to continue down this all-of-a-sudden golden road.

On Sunday, the question came up before the game because the Seahawks had beaten the Rams just 21 days prior, a 24-7 victory in St. Louis.

“It doesn’t matter what’s happened before,” Carroll said on Sunday night. “What are we going to do with this opportunity now? That’s what matters.”

The question arose again at halftime, after the Seahawks had sluggishly pushed their way to a 10-3 lead at the break. Breaks weren’t falling their way, and Seattle just couldn’t bust it open.

“It’s not happening the way we want,” Carroll said at halftime. “But what are we going to do now? The first half doesn’t matter now.”

The Seahawks proceeded to score 20 points in the second half, producing points on four of six drives with the two non-scoring drives being a missed field goal and the end of the game.

So now, with three games and a world of possibilities remaining in this season, the Seahawks return to that all-important question as they move forward. The last game, the four wins in the last month and all the ups and downs this season mean nothing now.

All that matters is what the Seahawks do against the Bears. The future will take care of itself from there.

“We have taken control of this season and that was a heck of a night of football,” Carroll told his players. “Let’s continue to finish like this.

“What are we going to do now? That’s what counts.”
