Kam Chancellor has hosted a community barbecue is his hometown of Norfolk, Va., the past two years. Saturday, he’ll do it again, but this time as a Pro Bowl strong safety for the Seahawks.
“It gets better every year,” Chancellor said Thursday, after the team’s OTA practice and before catching his flight to Virginia. “My first year, I didn’t expect a lot of people. But a lot of people showed up. The second year, a lot more people showed up. This year, a whole lot more people say they’re coming.
“So it’s good. Real good.”
The event – “7 Cities Annual Family & Friends Memorial Day Cookout” – will feature raffles, a softball tournament and appearances by special guests, including Seahawks teammate and Pro Bowl free safety Earl Thomas, local comedians and DJ Greyl D, who will provide the music. And, of course, BBQ.
“Everybody likes barbecue,” Chancellor said with a smile. “Everybody likes to eat. And there’s free food.”
But there’s more to the event, and Chancellor’s participation in it, than a lot finger licking.
“It’s a chance for me to show my faith to the community,” he said. “And it’s also a chance for everybody in the 7 Cities to get together and bond, and show everybody can come together as one and just have fun.”
