Darrelle Revis is intent on returning from knee surgery in time to start the regular season and play his way back into consideration as the NFL’s best cornerback. Part of that comeback will be proving to the Buccaneers that he is worth the first-round pick they traded to the Jets to obtain his services. Proving himself to others is not on Revis’ agenda, especially when it comes to Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

Sherman’s proclamation that he has supplanted Revis as the NFL’s top cornerback ignited an offseason Twitter and edia war between the two All-Pros. On Tuesday, Revis laughed at the thought that he had to prove himself to Sherman.

“I don’t have to prove nothing to nobody,” Revis told USA TODAY Sports. “I put my game on film, and people can see the results.”

Don’t you at least have to prove something to Richard Sherman?

Revis laughs.

Revis had a message for Sherman via USA Today:

“He needs to quit attaching his career to my career,” Revis said. “A lot of people need to have respect for this game. I’m not just talking about him. Respect what people have done to pave the way. Deion paved the way. Rod Woodson paved the way. Darrell Green. Mel Blount. Champ Bailey. Charles Woodson. Yeah, we’re the next group, but you don’t need to be getting into it with me.

“At the end of the day, this is a fraternity. We’re all in this together, competing. But you don’t have to shoot nobody else down.”
