Percy Harvin Activated

On the active roster at last, how Percy Harvin is able to handle practice each day this week will determine when he might play in his first game for the Seahawks.

Now that Percy Harvin is on the Seahawks’ 53-man roster, now what?

Harvin’s status after being activated off the physically unable to perform list earlier in the day was the main topic during coach Pete Carroll’s weekly day-after Q&A session with the media Monday afternoon. And for good reason, because the Seahawks gave up a lot to acquire the multiple-talented Harvin in a March trade with the Minnesota Vikings, and the receiver/returner/runner has waited a long time to play in an NFL game again.

His last game action was at CenturyLink Field last Nov. 4, when Harvin got an ankle injury during the Seahawks’ 30-20 victory over the Vikings that ended his season. But Harvin entered that game leading the NFL with 60 receptions; ranked second in kickoff return average (35.7); and had scored touchdowns as a receiver, returner and runner.

Harvin’s path to playing for the Seahawks was blocked when he had surgery on a troublesome hip on Aug. 1.

So, now what?

“Percy is officially activated, so that lets you know that he’ll be going after it this week and see how far we can take it,” said Carroll, a definite one-step-at-a-time guy. “If everything works out well he’ll practice Wednesday and start the process.”

And Harvin doesn’t just remain on a one-day-at-a-time track; it’s also how he responds the next day.

“He’s got to practice every day and show that all that’s he’s done in the rehab work has paid off and that he can sustain through each day,” Carroll said. “It’s really the next day that we always look at. He mixes in and how does he feel the next day. We’ll just see how that goes.

“To us, it’s not a pressure decision. We’re going to try, again, to consider all the factors and make sure we’re doing it right and make a real good choice as we get our information.”

You know Harvin would love to play against the Vikings on Sunday at CenturyLink Field, but the Seahawks also have their bye next week. So sitting Harvin against his former team would give him two more weeks to get ready for a December run that features consecutive games against the 7-2 New Orleans Saints at CenturyLink Field (Dec. 2), the 6-3 49ers in San Francisco (Dec. 8) and a New York Giants team that has won three in a row at the Meadowlands (Dec. 15).

“It could, it does (factor in),” Carroll said. “There’s a whole other week in there, so it’s really two weeks that you could buy. So we have that in mind. We haven’t rushed on any of these decisions, and we’re not going to start rushing them now.

“We’re not pressed to make a decision hastily.”
