Kam Chancellor: ‘I’m on schedule to where I want to be’

Kam Chancellor wants you to know his hip feels fine.

The Seahawks All-Pro strong safety repeated that notion in so many ways on Tuesday while fielding questions on the topic following the team’s training camp practice at Renton’s Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

Chancellor, who returned to practice this week for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in early April, said the procedure was performed to “clean up” an injury he has fought through for “five or six years” dating back to his collegiate days at Virginia Tech.

“I’m on schedule to where I want to be and I feel like I’m getting healthy,” Chancellor said. “I just feel like I’m on the perfect schedule to get right back on the field and get ready to go.”

The fifth-year pro Chancellor has yet to participate in any full-team drills, with most of his work coming during the Seahawks’ individual sessions to start each practice. But during an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Bob and Groz” that followed Tuesday’s meeting with the media, Chancellor told listeners he’s ready to go.

“I’m 100 percent,” Chancellor said. “Any time you see me on this field with pads on I’m 100 percent.”

Chancellor said toughing through the injury the past four seasons has slowed him down at times. It’s caused him to get caught in and out of breaks when covering receivers down field.

That’s an intimidating thought considering how productive the 2010 fifth-round draft pick has proven to be – recording 290 tackles and seven interceptions while starting 47 of 63 games played serving as the fast and physical enforcer of the team’s “Legion of Boom” defense.

Now that the injury is taken care of, Chancellor said he’s curious to see how much he can elevate his game.

“It’s kind of scary,” Chancellor told the team’s flagship radio station. “Literally, it’s really kind of scary. That’s where it’s kind of taking me to when I think about it – that ‘dark place’ where I just feel powerful, like nothing can stop me.”

With the hard-hitting Chancellor champing at the bit to get back to work, it’s been backup strong safety Jeron Johnson who has been filling in with the No. 1 defense. Johnson, the special teams standout who originally signed in Seattle in 2011 as an undrafted rookie out of Boise State, has been under Chancellor’s close watch through camp.

“He’s been looking pretty good,” Chancellor said of Johnson’s work with the starting unit. “He’s been down on his fits. He’s been making plays out there against the offense. He’s been very vocal out there and holding down the leadership spot for a good amount of time.”

Chancellor knows it’s ultimately up to the coaches and training staff to clear his return, but at this stage he feels like he’s on track to resume his role in the Seahawks secondary by the beginning of the season.

“I’m just going to go out here and practice day to day,” said Chancellor. “Do whatever the coaches and team asks me to do and go in whenever they allow me to.”
