Cliff Avril: “We Have Everything, We’ve Just Got To Make It Happen Now”
Cliff Avril joined Sports Radio 950 KJR AM for a conversation with Ian Furness and Jason Puckett on Wednesday, when the defensive end talked about the state of the 4-5 Seahawks after this past Sunday’s 39-32 loss to the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals, Seattle’s second straight home loss this season.
“I truly believe it’s all about us individually because we have the personnel, we have the talent, we have what it takes, we’re playing the right defense,” Avril said. “I think it just goes back to everybody, including myself, looking in the mirror and seeing what you can do to get better and how you can help the team to get better. That’s how I feel about it. We definitely have the talent, we have the right personnel, we have the right coaching. We have everything, we’ve just got to make it happen now.”
The Seahawks, who surrendered a fourth-quarter lead for the fifth time this season in Week 10, committed a season-high 14 penalties against Arizona, six of which came against the defense. It’s those self-inflicted wounds that Avril says the team needs to clean up.
“It’s not like we’re flat out getting our behinds just whooped, you know what I mean?” Avril said. “Like I said, we’re in every game and everything that happens is us. The last three years, and this is a new philosophy for me once I got here, the last three years that’s all we talk about. We don’t talk about the opponent. It’s all about how we can get better, and if we can get better we can play with the best of them, and it shows. Everything that happened in that game last week was us.”
Seattle’s next opportunity to correct those mistakes comes this weekend against another division opponent, with the club welcoming the San Francisco 49ers to CenturyLink Field.
“They’re going to bring their A-game because they have a good team over there,” Avril said of the 3-6 49ers. “Obviously their record and things like that don’t show, but we definitely can’t take them lightly.”
